However, in 1986, everything changed when Luca Gargano, a former brand ambassador for Saint James, purchased the company in his twenties. Under Gargano’s leadership, Velier made its mark by selecting its first single cask whiskies in 1992 and its first rum in 1996. The Diamond Estate, established around 1670, is the only remaining rum distillery in Guyana. Located on the east bank of the Demerara River, the distillery is operated by Demerara Distillers Ltd (DDL), a company created by the government of Guyana as part of an effort to consolidate the nation’s rum production.

This rum was distilled on the Port Mourant double wooden pot still, made from Greenheart wood, which is native to Guyana. The wood is highly suited to distilling as it strips spirit of sulphites, similar to copper. The still was moved to Uitvlugt after the Port Mourant distillery closed in the 1950s, and it remains in operation today, producing rums that are in high demand.
